Danger Mouse to release blank CD

Music producer Danger Mouse is to release a blank CD, after record label EMI reportedly cancelled his new album. It has already been streamed online, but Billboard magazine said a “legal dispute” with EMI derailed the project.

“All copies will be clearly labelled: ‘For Legal Reasons, enclosed CD-R contains no music. Use it as you will.’”

I’m fascinated by the modern music industry and it’s spiral into self destruction. There is very little that can actually be accomplished by resisting the new distribution and sales models that have existed for a while now and a lot of artists have recognised this. Danger Mouse himself made his name selling bootleg remixes of Jay-Z’s Black Album and The Beatles’ White Album and many other artist have been able to make the most of the free distribution that’s now available.

Anyway, however tempted I am to grab myself a copy, the $50 dollar price tag for a blank album and book by a man I’m not particularly bothered by is just a little too rich for my blood but if you’re looking for a piece of cultural history this is the time to get it, I can’t see this being done again.

Time for another MC Lars Audio link!
