Netherlands to close prisons for lack of criminals

Prisons in the only country in the EU with legalised drug use are now facing the risk of closure because there just aren’t enough criminals! With 14,000 spaces but only 12,000 criminals to house the massive surplus in housing is costing the Dutch government too much to keep open. This overcapacity is a direct result of the country’s falling crime rate and predictions are that this rate is going to continue to decline for some time to come. “Deputy justice minister Nebahat Albayrak announced on Tuesday that eight prisons will be closed, resulting in the loss of 1,200 jobs.”

I have no idea how they’ve done it but we really could use some Dutch thinking in the UK where our prisons are overcrowded and fit to burst.

well considering we’re all a happy bunch of helpful countries eager make life as easy for each other as possible, why not simply start to use dutch prisons as an overflow for ours? I mean, we’d basically be putting our staff and things in there, so they wouldn’t have to deal with running costs, but in the end, it all works out well eh? =D
