The most mindblowingly realistic CGI you’ll see all year

Everything you see in this advert for Silestone (counter tops) is unreal – it’s entirely CGI and totally mind blowing. We’ve seen a lot of big advances in digital video this past year but honestly this is simply stunning.

Production took Alex and Juan of The Mushroom Company 2 and a half months from concept to end and Alex is responding to people in the Vimeo page comments now if you want to ask him anything. Enjoy!

Ferrofluid + Meatgrinder = Beautiful living sculptures

According to the Wikipedia article…

“Ferrofluids are colloidal mixtures composed of nanoscale ferromagnetic, or ferrimagnetic, particles suspended in a carrier fluid, usually an organic solvent or water. The ferromagnetic nanoparticles are coated with a surfactant to prevent their agglomeration“.

Which essentially means “Oily Magnetic Liquid” capable of doing absolutely stunning things when near an electromagnetic field. The video below shows what happens when you take a simple meatgrinder screw, put it in a bowl of Ferrofluid and start changing its magnetic properties.

Science is awesome.

Miniature Masterpieces on the tip of a pencil

The Telegraph has an excellent new gallery up of work by Dalton Ghetti – 17 images and well worth a look.

Working entirely by hand with only two tools (a scalpel and a sewing needle) Dalton’s pieces take months to complete but really are incredible. He also says he hasn’t sold a single one of them yet, preferring instead to simply give them away to friends so if you’re after one for your wall – maybe try buying him a pint instead.

Illusion of the year winner – 2010

The winner of the Best Visual Illusion of the Year Contest 2010 has been announced and the award is well deserved. Koukichi Sugihara’s illusion “Impossible motion: magnet-like slopes” (at least we think that’s the name) was one of the few entries to be actually modelled in the real wold (not on a computer) and is a very deserving winner in our books.

Robot unicorn attack – what more could you want?

We don’t visit Adultswim nearly as much as we should do in all honesty so when we did and discovered that all we’ve needed to do all this time has been to “press Z to make your dreams come true” how could we not!

This fast paced, addictive and very simple game is definately worth at least 5 minutes of your time, after all, how often do you get to play a Robot unicorn? The music is excellent too!

It’s a bloody Nebulon-B Frigate… In Lego!!

OK we were absolutely blown away by this new post, not least because 2 of the things we happen to have in common with everyone else on earth are a love of all things Lego and a love of Star Wars (There were only 3 movies before you ask). Imagine then how happy we were when we discovered this fantastic creation lurking on the pages of the ever excellent mocpages.com.

The sheer amount of work, research and care that must have gone into crafting this from scratch, with only an idea and some images to go off is staggering! I’ve no idea how he’s managed to get some of the pieces to do what they are doing and we once built an entire Airport!

First pics of James May’s Lego house

Updates have been slow due to a torrent of birthdays and related celebrations but we’ve been sent a link to some of the first images of James May’s (of Top Gear fame) Lego house which is being built on Denbies wine estate as part of James is building the house as part of BBC Two’s James May’s Toy Stories, set to be broadcast later in the year. It’s only slightly disappointing that he’s decided to go with a simple square building design instead of something a little more inspired, but you’ve got to love the little Lego windows scattered throughout the structure.
