Maybe… but it doesn’t look likely unless more people get on board and soon.

The idea was spawned from a conversation on the UK Pirate Party IRC channel and then set in motion just a few days ago at midnight on the 1st July. The record breaking attempt is not just a bit of fun however but is also an excellent way of demonstrating the uniques benefits the bit torrent system has when it comes to distributing data compared to other methods. Many major publishers have taken to using Bit Torrent for distribution of large files including Channel4 and Star Trek Online but to name a couple yet the technology still suffers from a poor image in the public eye. Hopefully this , if successful will be another small step towards changing that.

It’s also going to be interesting to see how “big” a torrent can actually be. As far as we know a maximum size for torrents has never been established so asides from publicity participants may actually be helping expand the boundaries of science which is always a good thing in our books.

The current record, according to freakbits, “was set by an EZTV torrent and stands at around 124,000″ so this current attempt (sitting at well under 50 seeds and declining) has a very, very, very long way to go. You can find the torrent and help the effort at both the piratebay and EZTV or just head over to the official page to find out more. If you’ve got a client running head over and join in, within a few clicks you’ll be helping to make internet history.

via

Edit: currently the torrent appears to have 0 seeds and 0 leechers so we aren’t sure what’s going on there – can anyone update us?

Edit 2: Tracker’s offline apparently. Hopefully it’ll be up again soon.

It turns out that teenagers use the Internet to search for porn! I know I know, we had no idea either. Shocking but funny stuff none the less. Up at the top of the search results recorded by the resident big brother software were YouTube, google and facebook with a surprising result at the bottom (number 10) for Fred who I was only vaguely aware of before today.

My favourite quote from the article though comes right at the end where Ms Merritt, Symantec’s internet safety advocate, plays down the potential fury of Daily Mail reading types by saying…

“Any of us who have been teenagers are not surprised kids look for information about sex,” Ms Merritt told AFP news agency.

“I think we have all gotten over our shock that the Internet has porn.”

Very well said however what I found most interesting and truly shocking is that even though these computers were covered in parental protection software which presumably the kids were aware of, they still happily and regularly searched for porn!

Personally I’m convinced that the real search results and the truly gargantuan amounts of porn consumed by this age group will never fully be known because if I and my generation had enough savvy to find workarounds for this type of software today’s crop of teenagers with access to more portable bootable storage and software than ever before, certainly do. Or of course maybe it was just me that really REALLY didn’t want to have that awkward conversation with my mum about Google and teenagers today are just too bold to care.

A very cool little extension that trawls the blog or page you’re on for links and clues about the user to build up a broader profile across alternite online social media sites. Yes it’s a little limited right now and makes a couple of mistkes here and there but it is incredibly simple to use and looks like it has enough potential and a large enough enthusiastic fanbase to ensure further development and updates. Installed now because I just know I’ll forget to later and then regret it, oh and as a bonus, I just popped my experimental addon cherry with this one!
