Spurred on by a desire to make robot play companions for the young and lonely old people, Professor Sekine (of Utsunomiya, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan) has somehow ended up building a voice activated, human form mohawked killer robot.

“(we) wanted to make robots take care of the people” he said rather ominously while talking to asahi.com.

Fortunately for the moment “Mohican” named for her distinctive faux-hawk hair style, only kills wasps but increased production of the bot on some scale is planned for the future so if you’ve ever wanted you own army of killer robots, there’s never been a better time to place your order.

We stumbled upon this neat little idea by designer Patrick Frey recently, it’s a knitted calendar. Instead of ticking off the dates as you would with a traditional calendar you simply unravel the thing as the days pass by.

Nice but clearly NOT a design for people with cats.

According to the Wikipedia article…

“Ferrofluids are colloidal mixtures composed of nanoscale ferromagnetic, or ferrimagnetic, particles suspended in a carrier fluid, usually an organic solvent or water. The ferromagnetic nanoparticles are coated with a surfactant to prevent their agglomeration“.

Which essentially means “Oily Magnetic Liquid” capable of doing absolutely stunning things when near an electromagnetic field. The video below shows what happens when you take a simple meatgrinder screw, put it in a bowl of Ferrofluid and start changing its magnetic properties.
